This is reflected in our strategic plan through a specific goal to build capacity and excellence in our people, in recognition that they are our greatest asset. This includes our higher degree students.
We want the very best students working here with us and in return, we'll ensure the highest quality supervision, excellent facilities and work environment, and career development opportunities.
Our current students
The Institute has around 200 students enrolled from universities in Perth, nationally and internationally, conducting research projects from laboratory-based projects to population-wide studies.
We have students completing Honours, Masters, PhD and Doctor of Medicine degrees and a number of students undertaking formal work placements.
Student support program
We provide an environment where students thrive and are comprehensively supported to succeed in their studies and beyond. Some of the support available to students includes:
- Our Student Leadership Group which plans, supports and advocates for students consist of students, supervisors, senior staff and professional support. It is the main representative body at the Institute that advances the interests of students.
- We have comprehensive professional development opportunities including scientific writing, career support and planning, networking, PhD planning, health and wellbeing support and a raft of other options to support students, no matter their career path.
- The Institute provides funding to students to support research needs during their candidature. This funding can be used towards resources, laptops, software, candidature-related travel, conferences and any other area that will directly support your candidature.
- Students can also access our Employee Wellness Service, with up to four, free and confidential psychological counselling sessions each year.
The Kids proudly welcomes students for all backgrounds, including those from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, students with diverse genders, sexes and sexualities, neurodiverse and culturally and linguistically diverse students. We aim to create a safe and welcoming culture for all people at the Institute.
Formal Work Placements
This is for students that are undertaking a formal placement as part of their degree or a program.
If you wish to undertake a formal placement through your university, please send through a description (e.g. McCusker Centre, Aurora Intern, Biomed students) and any other placement-related documentation from your university/organisation. It is helpful to send through information about your proposed supervisor and/or team at The Kids if this is confirmed.

Year 10 Work Experience Student
If you are a Year 10 student seeking work experience as part of your school’s work experience program, please send through any documentation from your school as well as preferred dates.
